Penguins outshoot NNU, come up short in home opener

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team had plenty of scoring opportunities in its home opener but fell 1-0 to Northwest Nazarene on Kennelly Field at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex.

The Penguins (0-2-1) outshot the Crusaders (2-2-0) 17-10 and had five shots plus a pair of corner kicks in the first 15 minutes yet remained deadlocked at the half.

Senior Lauren Gollnick placed a corner kick into the box in the 12th minute that freshman Lily Dubuc shot but had blocked by the NNU defense. Gollnick had a shot seconds later but had that shot saved by Daniele Ortiz. Dominican had another opportunity in the 18th minute when Stephanie Owens played a ball to the dead center of the box. Gollnick had another good look but Ortiz dove to the ground for the save. Lina Miller's header in the 40th minute was saved, as was Melissa Stoakley's shot in the 42nd minute that glanced off the crossbar.

The game became more and more physical in the second half. Neither team took a shot in the first 10 minutes of the half but rather traded fouls — in total, the two teams combined for 21 fouls and six yellow cards. Another 10 minutes passed and Northwest Nazarene made the most of a lapse in the Dominican offense. Lexi Fesenback played a ball into open space on the left side to Nicole Nsa. Goalkeeper Gabriella Tassano was left stranded and ended up off balance, which allowed Nsa to net her third goal to the far right post past Dominican's freshman keeper.

Dominican had another shot that came inches from finding the back of the net in the 82nd minute with a shot off the post. Keira Dagy booted Dominican's last shot in the 82nd minute from near the top of the box that went wide left.

Tassano made seven saves and fell to 0-1-1 at goal. Ortiz made eight saves for NNU en route to the win.

The Penguins host San Francisco State (2-2-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. The Dominican men will play the NNU men in their home opener at 12:30 p.m. Video and live stats for both matches will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
