POMONA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team dropped its 2015 season opener on Thursday, 5-0, to No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona.
The nationally-ranked Broncos wasted no time finding the back of the net. 1:22 into the match, a cross form Hailey James found Tori Tappero for the score. Barely three minutes later, Natalie Di Angelo scored the Broncos' second goal of the afternoon. By halftime, the Penguins trailed 3-0.
Cal Poly Pomona added two late goals to put the match out of contention. Kaycee Uy scored in the 72nd minute and Sydney Yates put the ball above goalkeeper
Sylvanna Islas' reach for the Broncos' fifth goal.
The Penguins matched Cal Poly Pomona's shot total with seven but placed only two on goal — one from senior
Lauren Gollnick and one off the bench from fellow senior
Kayla Karlsson.
The Penguins head to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Sept. 5 for an 11 a.m. non-conference match. Dominican will then return home, where they Penguins will host Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
