SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — An early goal allowed set the tone early and the Dominican University of California men's soccer team never found its rythym in a 3-0 loss at Cal State East Bay on Thursday evening.
The Pioneers immediately applied pressure to the Penguins' starting lineup, which consisted of half a dozen true freshman, by scoring in the fifth minute. Victor Calderon played a ball in from the left side to Michael Paiva, who came across the middle of the box and finished from 15 yards out. The Penguins regrouped the rest of the half and controlled the ball for much of the half but none of their three shots were able to even the score.
Two more CSUEB goals, in the 63rd and 88th minute, sealed the defeat for Dominican. Jesus Ocegueda scored from 25 yards out and Fernando Herrera scored from close range, just outside the keeper box.
Martin Gonzalez had Dominican's shot on goal.
Roberto Macias had a pair of shots in his Penguin debut. Freshman
Connor Murphy also had a chance in the first half on a header that was snatched by CSUEB keeper Adrian Topete.
"We had good moments and it didn't feel like a 3-0 loss, a couple came at the end on mistakes. We worked hard but there are bits and pieces that we need to tighten up," said new Head Coach
Zach Kingsley, who took over head coaching duties less than two week agos. "We didn't get the ball wide and weren't dangerous enough in the final third. We can learn from it, move forward, sort out the issues, and work on them this next week."
The Penguins will next head to San Francisco for the Kezar Classic on Thursday, Sept. 10 vs. San Francisco State and Saturday, Sept. 12 vs. Chico State. Both matches are slated for 2 p.m. at historic Kezar Stadium.
