Injury-depleted Penguins suffer shutout

SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team has seen the injury bug that derailed its 2014 season strike in the 2015 season. On Thursday, the Penguins suffered a 3-0 loss to San Francisco State in the Kezar Classic hosted by ART U.

The Penguins (0-2) entered the day missing a pair starters from their previous match, plus several reserves. Then, senior Joshua Godoy came up limping in warmups, though he would enter the game in the second half. Freshman starter Matt Case was also injured in the first half and had to be helped off by an athletic trainer in the 25th minute.

San Francisco State (3-0), which for the first time ever has started the season with three consecutive shutouts, got on the scoreboard after Roberto Macias' shot was blocked in the 17th minute. A crucial lapse turned the momentum in the 32nd minute. SF State goalkeeper Emmanuel Jimenez came out to stop the Dominican offense and snatched up the ball. He kicked the ball the lenth of the field and Joe Rousseau played the ball from the right side past an off-balance Patrick Rabbitt to give the Gators the game-winner.

Micah Alo's shot in the 38th minute sailed wide and Bryan Juarez's shot in the 40th minute was blocked, forcing the Penguins to head into the half trailing 1-0.

The Gators doubled their lead in the 73rd minute thanks to Jakob Velega. He scored off of a header by Ayden Bowers off of a long throw by Robert Kelly. Max Talbert put the game out of reach in the 81st minute with a goal off of Nigus Solomon's corner kick.

Macias finished the day with three shots and Juarez had a pair. Alo, Austen McGregor, and Jordan Zamora all tallied one shot each. Senior Patrick Rabbitt had one save in goal for the Penguins in the first half and took the loss. Freshman Christian Lathrop made his first college appearance and allowed both second-half goals.

Dominican faces Chico State on Saturday, Sept. 12 as the Kezar Classic continues. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Kezar Stadium.
