SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team notched its first win of the season, 2-1 over visiting PacWest rival Holy Names, in dramatic fashion on Tuesday.
Junior
Roberto Macias, who had five of Dominican's eight shots on goal, provided all of the scoring for Dominican (1-7-0/1-2-0 PacWest) but his time didn't come until the 85th minute. Freshman
Jordan Zamora passed ahead to Macias on the left side, who blasted a shot from 35 yards out to the far back post and past diving HNU goalkeeper Kevin Gonzalez. Three minutes later, Macias had another chance, this time from even further out, and launched another shot resulting in the Penguins' second goal of the day. That proved vital as the Hawks scored in the 89th minute with a goal from Domonic Calderon.
After a scoreless first half, Holy Names (2-6-0/1-2-0 PacWest) sprayed 14 of its 20 shots in the second half. The Hawks' best scoring opportunity came in the 70th minute. Dominican goalkeeper
Patrick Rabbitt was whistled for a foul for taking too much time with the ball, which set up a free kick inside the box for Alfredo Castaneda. Dominican piled across the mouth of the goal and the pressure forced Castaneda to clank his shot off of the right post and Dominican successfully cleared the ball away.
Between the two schools wearing gold shoelaces in the match and donations taken throughout the day, nearly $1,000 was raised for Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer®, an initiative of Go4TheGoal®. The charity's goal is to raise awareness and funding for the fight against pediatric cancer. All funds stay in the community where they are raised to support local children, with the funds from this match benefitting UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
