SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell 1-0 to visiting Dixie State on Friday in PacWest play.
It was a tough pill to swallow for the Penguins (1-8-0/1-3-0 PacWest), who outworked Dixie State (4-1-1/2-0-1) at the offensive end. Dominican launched 11 shots total with three on goal. However, the Red Storm did a good job of neutralizing the Penguins' leading goal scorer,
Roberto Macias. At times the Red Storm put up to three players around him and as a result held him to one shot on goal.
Dixie State's goal came in the 42nd minute. Macias went to clear a ball in the box but his high kick was dangerous and resulted in a foul. The Penguins defense temporarily kept the Red Storm from scoring but Dominican defender
Connor Murphy was knocked forward and fell forward. In attempting to break his fall, he was whistled for a hand ball. That set up a penalty kick for the Red Storm and Santiago Alejandro netted what would turn out to bet the game-winner.
Dominican hits the road for the next five matches. The Penguins will head to Fresno Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur next week, then embark on a three-match trip to Hawai'i.
Dominican returns home for an Oct. 31 Halloween matchup vs. the team that Dominican currently shares first place with, Academy of Art. Dominican Athletics will be hosting "Chilly's Cove" for parents, alumni, and friends of the program, plus the all-new "Kick or Treat" event featuring a free carnival with games and candy for kids.
