Penguins unable to cool red-hot Silverswords

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team was unable to stop Chaminade on its home floor in a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17) loss on Thursday.

The Penguins slipped to 3-5 and 0-2 in PacWest play while the Silverswords are off to their best start in program history at 10-1, and sit atop the PacWest standings at unblemished 3-0.

Sophomore Aimee Steinwand tallied a team-high 16 kills for the Penguins but the combination of Keani Passi (18 kills) and Kim Spring (17 kills), combined with two more in double digits — Daisia LaBrie (11) and Cassie Rushlow (10), proved to be too much for the Penguins. Dominican had an early advantage but was unable to take the early match lead after letting a 24-21 lead slip away. After a Steinwand kill gave the Penguins set point, the Silverswords answered with five consecutive points to grab the momentum. Chaminade added on in set two with an early 3-0 lead but Dominican erased that with a four-point charge midway through the set and a .323 hitting percentage in the set. Dominican grabbed enough of a lead at 22-18 with another four-point surge and traded points before a Chaminade attack error sent the two teams into intermission tied 1-1. Set three was deadlocked until the end. Tied 20-20, the two teams exchanged points until the Silverswords took a three-point lead thanks to a Dominican service error and back-to-back kills from Passi and Brenda Walker to make it 24-21. The Penguins answered with two points of their own but another Dominican service error gave the lead back to Chaminade. In set four, the Silverswords quickly built a 12-9 lead into a 17-9 lead and Dominican never got any closer.

Amanda Lee had a team-high 24 digs and Madeline Powelson added 17 with five kills in the loss. Dominican's Hannah Smith had 39 assists while Natashya Enos and Skyler Curry dished out 31 and 21 assists, respectively, for the Silverswords. In addition to the four in double-digit kills, five Silverswords recorded double-digit digs as well.

Dominican will continue its three-match trip through Hawaii on Friday, Sept. 25 at BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders, who went 22-6 in 2014, are off to a slow start in 2015 with a 3-6 mark. This will be their first match since winning their PacWest opener, 3-2, at UH Hilo on Sept. 19. First serve between Dominican and BYU-Hawaii is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Laie, Hawaii.
