LAIE, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team dropped the second match of its three-match road trip to Hawaii with a 3-0 (25-11, 28-26, 26-24) loss at BYU-Hawaii on Friday night.
After quickly dropping set one, the Penguins (3-6/0-3 PacWest) bounced back and made a game of it in sets two and three. Despite being swept, the Penguins battled for every point and force the Seasiders (4-6/2-0 PacWest) to go the extra mile for the sweep. The Penguins trailed 20-16 in set two and rallied to tie the set at 24-24 before BYU-Hawaii secured the final two points on back-to-back kills from Kathleen Collette Kalougata. Dominican trailed 15-11 in set three and used a 7-1 run to take an 18-16 lead. Dominican had set point at 24-22 but the Seasiders rallied with four consecutive points to complete the sweep.
Sophomore
Aimee Steinwand led the Penguins with a dozen kills and freshman
Brittany Latigue added eight. Freshman
Kate Even and junior
Madeline Powelson each added five. Junior
Amanda Lee led the Penguins with a dozen digs while Steinwand and
Alexa LoGiudice each added nine apiece. Junior
Hannah Smith dished out 26 assists
Leilani Adolpho led all players with 14 kills for the Seasiders. Collette Kalougata had 13 kills. Elizabeth Solaita and Ying Chun Chen each had 15 digs.
The Penguins will look to salvage their three-match road trip at Hawai'i Pacific University. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priorty in Honolulu.
