CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer had plenty of opportunities against the No. 6 team in the West Region, Chico State, but were unable to capitalize in a 1-0 loss.
Dominican (0-4-1) allowed the only goal of the match in the 19th minute. The Wildcats (4-1-1) passed the ball around to Lindsey Dias atop the box, who threaded a pass to Shelby Lanksbury. Lanksbury netted her third goal of the season by spinning inside and beating Dominican goalkeeper
Gabriella Tassano over her left shoulder.
The Penguins made tactical adjustments in the second half and it showed. The Penguins launched eight of their 12 shots in the second half and forced Chico State goalkeeper Caitlin Duval to make some tough saves. Dominincan narrowly missed an opportunity in the first minute of the second half. With three Penguins near the box, the ball rolled in front of the open net after Duval was dranw out to defend the ball was booted out by the Chico State defense for a corner kick. That attempt sailed far right.
In the 74th minute, a stop at the defensive end led to a fast break for the Penguins. Senior
Lauren Gollnick passed the ball ahead on the left side to sophomore
Mariah Meza. That led to a 1v1 opportunity for Meza but the Duval came out and slid to smother the ball for the save. In the 85th minute, Meza had another one of her game-high five shots on goal saved that led to a corner kick. That presented an aother opportunity for Gollnick but her shot from the far right wing was saved.
The Wildcats had 11 shots, five on goal. Tassano made four saves while Duvall made all nine saves that came her way. The Wildcats win was career win No. 200 for Kim Sutton.
Dominican will begin PacWest play on Thursday, Sept. 24 versus the newest member of the PacWest, Concordia Irvine. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Kennelly Field, after the men's match. Live stats and video will be available at
