SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team forced overtime but allowed a golden goal in a 2-1 loss to Concordia Irvine on Thursday in the two teams' PacWest opener on Kennelly Field at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex.
A defensive lapse by the Penguins (0-5-1/0-1-0 PacWest) in the seventh minute led to a Kendall Reekstin goal for the Eagles (2-1-2/1-0-0 PacWest). Reekstin won the 1v1 by beating freshman goalkeeper
Gabriella Tassano to her left to the far post from point-blank range.
The match remained 1-0 in CUI's favor until the 61st minute. Shortly after double-yellow cards were issued to Lizette Luna and
Mariah Meza, Meza got the best of the Eagles' defense.
Bailey Kiser passed to Meza, who drew goalkeeper Darby Clements out and finished to the back left for the tie.
Meza's goal kept the match knotted and Dominican sophomore goalkeeper
Sylvanna Islas kept the Penguins in it in the second half with five saves. However, CUI broke through with the game-winner in the 94th minute. Another Dominican lapse allowed Alexia Garcia-Irons to break free into the box, which forced Islas to come out for the 1v1.
