SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer rallied to erase an early deficit but allowed three unanswered goals in a 4-1 loss to San Francisco State on Tuesday.
Failing to clear the ball in the 10th minute caused Dominican (0-3-1) to allow an easy goal in the front right of the box. Three minutes later, Dominican freshman
Bailey Kiser played a ball down the left side and through traffic. She passed through the box to
Mariah Meza near the far right post and Meza finished to the back left to tie the match.
A goal in the 23rd minute gave SF State (3-2-0) the lead for good. Dominican had another defensive breakdown, leaving freshman goalkeeper
Gabriella Tassano exposed and forced to guess. She dove to her left but Kelsey Wetzstein finished to her left to put the Gators back ahead. Goals in the 30th and 32nd minutes opened up the game. The Gators' third goal came on another 1v1 and their fourth came off of a throw-in from the right side.
Dominican was limited to five shots, four on goal. Senior
Lauren Gollnick had a pair and freshman
Lily Dubuc added a shot. Tassano (0-2-1) was charged with the loss and logged 63 minutes. Sophomore
Sylvanna Islas played the final 27 minutes and made four saves. The Gators attempted 11 shots on goal by 10 different players.
The Penguins will have their work cut out for them on Saturday, Sept. 19 as they head to Chico State for a 7 p.m. match.
