Penguins allow golden goal in overtime to Chico State

SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team caught another tough break on Saturday in the second round of the Kezar Classic in a 2-1 overtime loss to Chico State.

The Penguins (0-3-0) found themselves in an early hole after a free kick from 40 yards out to the top of the box from Carter Johnson found Rajaee DeLane, who squared up and scored to the left post. Dominican caught a break in the 14th minute. Roberto Macias' shot was initially saved by Chico State goalkeeper Andrew Matthews. However the ball got away from Matthews and an unsuccessful attempt by the Wildcats (1-2-1) to clear the ball resulted in an own goal.

The Next 76 minutes passed by scoreless and the match went into overtime. In the 96th minute, DeLane came up with a rebound off of Dominican goalkeeper Oscar O'Con and Johnson scored the game-winner.

Despite the outcome, the Penguins did show signs of improvement. The Penguins tallied 11 shots with three on goal, both which were the most in their first three matches. Macias led the Penguins with three shots and was named to the Kezar Classic All-Tournament Team. Micah Alo and Matt case each had a pair of shots. O'Con played the entire match and made three saves and fell to 0-1-0 in goal. For NNU, Johnson had a third of NNU's 18 shots. Tristan Montoya replaced Matthews and earned the win to move to 1-0-0.

The Penguins will host Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m., followed by the women versus San Francisco State at 4 p.m. Video and live stats for both matches will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
