FRESNO, Calif. — What a difference a week makes. Just four days after dropping a one-point ballgame to Fresno Pacific at home, the Dominican University of California women's basketball team bounced back by besting the Sunbirds on their home floor, 86-64.
The Penguins avenged Saturday's close 61-60 loss in San Rafael by running away with Wednesday night's rematch. Early three-pointers by
Jessy Marshall and Holboke helped Dominican establish a 10-4 lead. From there, the Penguins doubled their lead to a dozen, 25-13, by the 10-minute mark. Another Holboke layup grew the lead to 19 with two minutes to go in the first half and Dominican led 42-25 at the break. Dominican shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in the first half, four of which came from deep. Three longballs came from
Carly Holboke, who had 16 points at the half.
Sarah Nelson, coming off her second triple-double of the season had a double-double by halftime with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Dominican poured it on in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the second stanza. The Penguins led by 30, 63-33, with 13:55 to go in the game and never led by less than 21 the rest of the way. The Penguins shot 49 percent on the night, including 60 percent from three-point range, Dominican's highest percentage of the season. FPU connected on just one three-pointer on the night.
Carly Holboke finished with a career-high 26 points and matched a career-high five three pointers. Nelson added a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and added four blocks, giving the nation's leading shot blocker 101 for the season.
Allyssa Weatherd added 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Marshall added 10 points in the victory.
Danielle Yamauchi broke her career-high with 12 assists, which is also a new single-game record for the Penguins in the Division II era.
Jenay Herring and Taylor Caspers had 13 points apiece to lead the Sunbirds. Keairra White added 11 points and Jasmine Shedrick finished with 10.
With the win, Dominican moved ahead of UH Hilo and is a half place behind sixth-place Academy of Art for the final berth in the PacWest Championships in March. The Penguins return to the Bay Area for three games to face their local PacWest counterparts before finishing the regular season in Hawai'i. Dominican heads to Notre Dame de Namur (4-17/2-12 PacWest) on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Belmont, California.
