BELMONT, Calif. — Dominican University of California senior center
Sarah Nelson poured in 24 points and reached 300 career blocks in a 76-56 PacWest victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday night.
Nelson's three blocks came before the half and she pulled down 11 rebounds as the Penguins outrebounded Notre Dame de Namur 55-44. Dominican limited NDNU to 31.9 (23-of-72) shooting, including 9-of-31 (29 percent) shooting in the first half as the Penguins led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 39-21 halftime lead.
Winners of four of their last five games, the Penguins jumped out to a six-point lead in the first two minutes and never looked back. Ten minutes into play, a front-end free throw by
Melissa Boscarino put Dominican up by double digits. From there, Dominican used an 11-point run to stretch the lead to 29-12 at the six-minute mark.
Dominican quickly pushed the lead to 20 in the second half and led comfortably. The Penguins led by as many as 24 points and never fewer than 16 in the second half.
Boscarino added a season-high 15 points and
Carly Holboke added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Allyssa Weatherd scored nine points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
Kirsten Liana led NDNU with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Nanea Woods added 13 points in the loss.
At 11-10, the Penguins have already won their most games in a season at the Division II level. With five regular season games to go, they are one game away from matching their most wins in a season in PacWest Conference play. The win also brought Dominican within a half game of ART U (13-9/8-6 PacWest) for the sixth and final spot in the standings — the top six teams advance to the PacWest Championships in March. Dominican faces ART U in the Penguins' final home game of the season on Monday, Feb. 16. First, Dominican will host Holy Names on Saturday, Feb. 14. Tipoff for both games is slated for 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at
