Weatherd, Boscarino fuel Penguins in overtime win

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Things looked dim for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team after Allyssa Weatherd fouled out with less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation but Melissa Boscarino picked up the slack as the Penguins rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to an 86-80 overtime victory over Chaminade.

Weatherd fouled out after playing 32 minutes and scoring 32 points with 11 rebounds. The conference's leading shooter went 10-for-18, though she went just 12-of-24 from the free throw line. The Penguins trailed 74-71 at that point but Boscarino scored the game's next five points to put the Penguins up 76-74. Carissa McBride's pair of free throws with 40 seconds to go knotted the game at 76-76. The Penguins had a chance to go ahead but Boscarino forced a layup early in the possession, which allowed Chaminade to get a final look in regulation but Glacen Florita's three-pointer was off the mark.

Boscarino redeemed herself with the first bucket of overtime, then got the defensive rebound, which led to a Sarah Nelson jumper. In fact, Nelson's basket was the only one not made by Boscarino, who single-handedly outscored the Silver Swords 7-4 in overtime. Jessy Marshall's free throw accounted for Dominican's other point in overtime. Boscarino finished with a career-high 24 points in 24 minutes, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out a pair of assists.

Things looked bleaked after a forgettable first half in which the Penguins spotted the Silver Swords a 49-36 halftime lead on 54.6 percent shooting (18-of-33). Dominican picked up the defense in the second half and Chaminade to 34.5 percent (10-of-29), and then to just 28.6 percent (2-of-7) in overtime.

The Penguins relied nearly solely on their starters to earn the season sweep, as the reserves went scoreless in a combined 40 minutes. Nelson played all but a minute of the game and added 10 points, 11 rebounds, and added to three blocks to bring her season total to 123. The 6-foot-4 senior's 5.13 blocks per game continues to lead the nation. Marshall scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and had a big three-pointer that gave Dominican its first lead of the second half. Danielle Yamauchi added seven points, five assists, and four rebounds in 41 minutes.

Lilia Maio scored a team-high 23 points and set a single-game record for the Silver Swords with 18 rebounds. Katie Buskey added 22 points in the loss.

Having already posted the most wins in the Division II era under Head Coach Tim LaKose, the Penguins can do no worse than .500 after Thursday night's victory. They'll look to record the program's first winning season both in the Division II era and in PacWest Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 28 when they head to UH Hilo. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. in Hilo.
