Penguins finish 2014-15 with best-ever record in DII era

HILO, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team ended its season with an 81-70 loss to UH Hilo on Saturday night.

The Penguins opened the game on a 14-5 run but a 20-4 Vulcans run turned the tables and found the Penguins trailing 33-24 with five minutes left in the half. The margin was the same at halftime, 40-31. The Vulcans' second-half lead grew to as large as 13 but Dominican rallied. A seven-point run, fueled by six consecutive points from Allyssa Weatherd pulled the Penguins within two, 64-62, with 4:21 to go. From there, UH Hilo went 8-of-10 from the free throw line to extend the lead back to 11 before four Dominican free throws trimmed the lead back to nine. Neither team scored in the final 30 seconds.

Weatherd scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. She fininshes the season as Dominican's leading scorer (17.8 ppg).

Sarah Nelson, the team's leading rebounder and blocker, finished her career as a Penguin with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Teams avoided her for much of the final stretch but Nelson added one final block on Saturday and continues to lead the nation with 4.96 blocks per game. She finishes her career as the all-times blocks leader with 320 and 3.1 per game and holds the single-game record with two 10-block games. She is also the all-time leader in the Division II era with 861 points, 752 rebounds, 388 field goals made. Nelson also set several single-season records this season — field goals made (159), rebounds (274), and blocked shots (124). Additionally, Nelson shares the lead as the all-time leader in the Division II era with 28 games played in 2011-12.

Jessy Marshall and Carly Harris each added 13 points apiece int he loss.

Danielle Yamauchi finished her career with eight points and an assist. Yamauchi is the all-time leader in the Division II era with 367 career assists, 126 steals, 107 games played, 69 games started, and 2764 minutes. She set a single-game record in the Division II era with 12 assists at Fresno Pacific on Feb. 4 of this season. She is the single-season leader in the Division II era with 4.4 assists per game this season and 118 total asssists and 883 minutes played in 2013-14.

Lauren Hyatt had a point and a rebound off the bench in her final game as a Penguin. Hyatt is second behind Nelson with 468 career rebounds. She holds the single-game record in the Division II era with seven steals last season versus ART U. She shares the lead as the all-time leader in the Division II era with 28 games played in 2011-12.

Kirstie Williams was one of five Vulcans in double digits and had a team-high 18 points.

The Penguins finish the 2014-15 campaign at 13-13 and 10-10 in PacWest play in their first season under Head Coach Tim LaKose. Both are program bests in the Division II era.
