SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting UH Hilo on Sunday, 8-0 in six innings, and 2-1.
The Penguins never found a rhythm in game one as they recorded three hits and as many errors.
Ashlyn Moriarity gave up six runs over five innings but only three of those were earned.
Angelina Lombardi gave up a pair of runs, one unearned, in an inning of relief.
In game two, Colleen Aubrey got UH Hilo on the board with a leadoff home run but starter
Katelyn Harden bounced back by striking out the side in the second. Harden ended up striking out five but surrendered a run in the fifth on a leadoff, walk, and single. The Penguins had runners on in the fifth, sixth, and seventh including a
Tayler Munoz triple in the seventh, but were unable to plate the tying run. Dominican's run came in the second inning.
Catlyn Cavender led off the inning with a walk and moved up 60 feet on
Kelsey Goodner's sacrifice bunt. Cavender was caught off the bag during
Alyssa Lanza's at bat but with the center fielder covering the bag the ball sailed high for an errant throw. That allowed Cavender to score from second though
Sarah McKenzie, who tried to score all the way from first, was out at home on the play.
Despite four errors on the day, the Penguins had some nice defense of their own. In the fourth inning, center fielder
Alyssa Lanza, who is coming off of season-ending knee surgery last year, tracked down a ball near the base of the wall and hit cutoff
Kayla Rodriguez at shortstop. Rodriguez fired home to
Leslie Mesa, who applied the tag to pinch runner Amanda Lara. On the next play, Munoz speared a ball on the third base line.
Munoz and Mesa finished their days 2-for-5 at the plate.
Dominican hosts Central Washington next Saturday, Feb. 21 in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. Live stats will be available on
