Penguins split with Central Washington

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California softball team picked up a non-conference split in epic fashion on Saturday versus Central Washington, taking the nightcap 3-0 after dropping game one 6-0.

Katelyn Harden tossed her second complete-game victory of the season to earn the split. She scattered seven hits and struck out four without issuing a walk. She had plenty of help from her defense, especially Tayler Munoz, who had a career-high seven assists in the game. She twice worked out of big jams. After striking out the first two batters to begin the third, Harden gave up a pair of singles but induced a fly ball. In the sixth, she allowed a leadoff single and double to put runners at second and third. She induced a popup to shortstop Kayla Rodriguez, who nearly then picked off the lead runner for the double play. Harden then picked up her final two strikeouts of the day to strand the pair of runners.

Rodriguez led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single. Three batters later, with two outs, Harden drove Rodriguez home all the way from first wth an RBI double to right center. Then, Catlyn Cavender put an exclamation point on things with her third homer of the season. Cavender's two-run shot slammed off the face of the scoreboard to make it a 3-0 game as she became the first-ever Dominican player to hit the scoreboard in a game. Cavender, who had previously accomplished the feat in practice, was surrounded by her teammates after the game when she signed her name on the scoreboard's I-beam as the first member of the "Dominican Dent Club."

The Penguins offense was held quiet in game one. CWU starter Kiana Wood (2-0) faced the minimum over the first four innings and no hit the Penguins until the sixth inning when Tayler Munoz broke up the no-no with a hard single to first base. Ashlyn Moriarity tossed three scoreless innings before running into trouble the second time the lineup. CWU's first six batters of the fourth inning reached base and six consecutive runners came home to score. Moriarity finished the game strong with three perfect innings.

Dominican will now head to No. 12 Dixie State for a pair of PacWest doubleheaders on Saturay, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1.
