SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — All 11 players got into the scoring column on Saturday night as the Dominican University of California women's basketball team cruised to an 88-56 PacWest victory on Saturday night versus visiting Holy Names.
Danielle Yamauchi ran the offense to great effect, getting all of her teammates involved, and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and dished out five assists. The 5-foot-4 guard even had a block. Five Penguins reached double digits, led by
Allyssa Weatherd's 18 points, 14 rebounds, to go with six assists and a pair of steals.
Carly Holboke added 16 points off the bench on 6-of-12 shooting with four three-pointers. Senior
Sarah Nelson continued her stellar play with a 5-for-10 night. The nation's leading shot blocker had 11 points, 12 rebounds, and added six blocks. She now has 804 points and 710 career rebounds.
Melissa Boscarino matched a career-high 15 points. Senior
Lauren Hyatt added 10 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting with three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Dominican, which entered the game leading the PacWest and No. 21 in the nation, in field-goal percentage defense, limited HNU to 31.3 percent (20-of-64). Dominican also outrebounded HNU 48-39. In contrast, the Penguins shot a season-high 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the field. Dominican also won the rebounding battle, 48-39.
After HNU scored on a pair of free throws, the Penguins jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Dominican did not allow an HNU field goal until over six minutes into the game.
Carly Holboke's fast break layup gave Dominican a 10-point lead a few seconds after and the Penguins cruised to a 42-25 halftime lead. Seventy seconds into the second half, Dominican built the lead to 20 and led by 30 with seven minutes to go.
Garysha Youngblood led HNU with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
With the win, Dominican moves into a sixth-place tie in the PacWest standings at 9-7. BYU-Hawaii, also at 9-7, currently holds the tiebreaker though with their head-to-head win back on Jan. 19. However, the Seasiders have to face second-place California Baptist on Monday, Feb. 16. T
he top six teams advance to the PacWest Championships in March. Dominican faces ART U in the Penguins' final home game of the season on Monday, Feb. 16.
