BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team held Notre Dame de Namur to 29.8 percent shooting in a convincing 63-49 victory on Tuesday night.
Dominican held the Argonauts to a staggering 14-of-47 from the floor. The 14 field goals were the fewest allowed by a Dominican team in the Division II era. Dominican fell behind early — in part due to a rare six-point possession consisting of a foul on a successful three-pointer followed by a technical — but quickly tied the game at 10-10. The Argos went on an 11-1 run to take a 21-11 lead. However, the Penguins held NDNU scoreless over the next 8:21 and NDNU did not score again until the second half. The Penguins pounded it into the paint for 44 points, 16 in the first half, and led 23-21 by halftime.
Zach Ginter's free throw gave NDNU the lead back early in the second half but Dominican used a seven-point run to pull ahead for good. From there, the Penguins stretched the lead to double digits at the 11-minute mark on a
Josh Armstrong three-point play and never led by fewer than seven points the rest of the way.
Dominique Taplin went 8-of-12 and led all players with 21 points and added four rebounds and four steals.
Josh Ramirez added 13 points and six rebounds. Armstrong scored 10 points and reeled in four rebounds.
Matt Hayes finished with seven points and did not record a three-pointer for just the third time this season.
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten added six points and six rebounds.
Bobby Johnson came off the bench to lead all players with a career-high eight rebounds.
Jalen Young led NDNU with 18 points. Ginter and Don Washington each scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. James Northup (6 points) and Jordan Reise (5 points) were the only other two Argonauts to record a point.
Taplin brought his three-year career total to 995 points and passed
Connor Haysbert (986 points) to become the Penguins' all-time leading scorer in the Division II era. During the Division II era, Taplin is also the career leader in field goals attempted (711) and free throws made (233). He needs only 21 rebounds to topple Haysbert as the career leader in rebounds and 28 minutes to pass
Myles Carrillo as the all-time leader in minutes played. Thirty-two more points would match a single-season program record during the DII era, which he set last season.
The victory moved Dominican into sole possession of seventh place in the PacWest standings. The Penguins will finish the season versus the two teams below them, Chaminade and UH Hilo, as well as sixth-place Hawaii Pacific. First, Dominican returns home to San Rafael on Saturday, Feb. 14 to face Holy Names, then hosts Academy of Art at home on Monday, Feb. 16. Tipoff for the final two home games is slated for 7:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at
