Penguins hold on to celebrate Taplins' 1000 points

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominique Taplin scored the first five points to secure 1,000 points and Josh Ramirez capped a 23-point night victory with a fast-break dunk to secure a 79-73 Dominican University of California men's basketball victory over visiting Holy Names on Saturday.

Taplin, who became the program's leading scorer in the Division II era in the Penguins' victory at NDNU on Tuesday, easily reached the 1,000-point mark in his three-year career with a layup and a three-pointer. Dominican led five minutes into the game and never relinquished the lead but it was not an easy — or pretty — win. Seven minutes into the game, both teams had combined for 21 points as well 21 turnovers. While the total cooled to 35 turnovers by the end of the game and the scoring picked up, the game wasn't decided until down the stretch. An eight-point Penguins lead was cut to two, 55-53, with six minutes to go. Karl Ohrner's only basket of the night came from three feet behind the three-point line. The junior found nothing but net to put the Penguins up 60-55 with 5:15 to go. Taplin scored the next four points to build the lead back to nine though HNU rallied yet again. Dorian Hardy's three-pointer cut the Dominican lead to three with 28 seconds left. Matt Hayes was fouled twice and three free throws built the lead back to six with 15 seconds. Another HNU three-pointer, this time by Richard Craig, again made it it a one-possession game with 12 seconds left. Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten hit a wide-open Ramirez off the full-court inbounds pass. Ramirez slammed it home to make it a five-point game with seven seconds and another Hayes free throw iced the victory.

Ramirez led all players with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Hayes added 21 points on 9-of-11 free throw shooting with a team-high nine rebounds. Taplin, who now has career 1,012 points, finished his historic night with 17 points and six rebounds.

Craig and Joshua Crum each scored HNU with 16 points.

Dominican is half a game behind Hawaii Pacific in the PacWest standings and will face the Sharks in the first game of Dominican's three-game trip to Hawaii. The Penguins will then finish the season versus the two teams below them, Chaminade and UH Hilo, as well as sixth-place Hawaii Pacific. First, Dominican completes the home season versus Academy of Art at home on Monday, Feb. 16. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. with a Senior Night presentation set for before the game.
