HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team dropped its Opening Day non-confernce doubleheader to Cal State East Bay, 9-1 in five innings and 6-5.
Dominican jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one on
Katelyn Harden's RBI double to left-centerfield.
Kayla Rodriguez, who was hit by a pitch four times on the day, came in to score. The lead didn't stick though. The Pioneers took advantage of a fielding error to open the bottom of the first. Lauren Vestal came all the way around to tie the game on Jaynie MacDonald's double through the left side. Marisa Lerma followed with a two-run homer to left field. Later in the inning, the Pioneers made it a 4-1 game on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. A two-run Ali Cerminara home run in the fourth inning, followed by Rose Marston's RBI single to right-centerfield made it 8-1. Allie Kornahrens walked it off with a pinch-hit homer to center field.
In game two, the Penguins got on the scoreboard first yet again in the second inning.
Catlyn Cavender led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt from
Samantha Talavera. She moved to third on an
Ashlyn Moriarity groundout, then scored when starting pitcher
Kelsey Goodner busted down the first base line to beat the dropped throw. Yet again, the Pioneers would come back in the bottom half of the inning. This time, CSUEB tied the game on a bases-loaded walk. In the third inning, Dominican regained the lead to make it 2-1. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced on
Tori Johnson's groundout, and scored on a
Leslie Mesa popup. However, the Pioneers took the lead back with a three-run third. Dominican tied the game yet again in the fifth on back-to-back singles from Harden and Cavender. Yet agian, CSUEB answered with two runs to regain the lead. Cavender led off the top of the seventh by taking the second pitch she saw over the right field fence. Talavera was hit by a pitch but the Penguins were unable to drive her in.
Moriarity took the loss in game one.
Gaby Katafias was charged with the loss in game two. Cavender, who led the Penguins as a freshman last season with a .346 batting average, went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs, two RBI, and her first career home run. Rodriguez had three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
The Penguins head to Sonoma State on Wednesday for another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
