ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team staged a 4-0 lead but was unable to hold the lead in a 6-5 extra innings loss at Sonoma State.
Center fielder
Leslie Mesa gave Dominican the early 1-0 lead with a double to right center that brought left fielder
Tori Johnson home all the way from first. The Seawolves got a run in the fifth though the Penguins got the run back in the top of the sixth with Johnson's two-out single up the middle that plated
Tayler Munoz. However, Amanda Llerena avoided further trouble by stranding a pair. The Seawolves then struck for a four-run bottom of the sixth. With the international tiebreaker in effect in the eighth for non-conference games, Dominican twice got baserunners to third but were unable to bring them home. Pinchrunner Karly Macadangdang advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then came home on Holli Brown's single back up the middle.
Starter
Ashlyn Moriarity pitched well, scattering three hits over four innings and striking out one, and twice got out of bases-loaded jams. Freshman
Gaby Katafias went two innings and allowed five runs. Sophomore
Angelina Lombardi worked two and a third innings and was charged with the loss. Llerena went the distance and picked up the win for the Seawolves.
In all, Dominican stranded 11 runners, though the Seawolves also stranded 12. Mesa finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI. Johnson and
Catlyn Cavender both went 2-for-5. Johnson scored twice and drove in one. Cavender scored once and drove in a pair.
After being beaned twice,
Kayla Rodriguez has now been hit a staggering six times in three games. Rodriguez was also hit by a pitch in game two, which was halted after four innings due to darkenss. The Penguins scored in the first inning on a Cavender RBI single but the Seawolves led 3-1 when the game was suspended. The game will be resumed at a later date to be determined.
