SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's basetball team dug itself an early hole and never recovered in a 72-66 loss to Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion on Thursday.
The loss was the first-ever for a Penguins program that entered the game with a 12-0 mark versus the Urban Knights.
The Penguins (5-4/1-1 PacWest) failed to register a field goal through the first six minutes and dug themselves a 17-2 hole. They cut the lead to nine by the midway point of the first half but ART U extended the lead to 19 before a pair of
Reverend Maduakor free throws trimmed the deficit to 44-27 at halftime.
Dominican pulled close late in the second half.
Ryo Tawatari came up with a tip rebound who drove the lane and got to the free throw line. His first shot didn't fall but second attempt cut the lead to 69-66 with under a minute to go. Two three-point attempts failed to fall for the Penguins in their final possession and Jase Harrison iced it at the free throw line for ART U (4-5/2-1 PacWest).
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten led the Penguins with 18 points and fouled out.
Reverend Maduakor came off the bench for 11 points and Seth TUrner added 10 points.
Matt Hayes was held to two points.
Harrison led the Urban Knights with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Chris Salas came off the bench for 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Dominican will look to finish out the calendar year with a winning record on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Notre Dame de Namur in an afternoon doubleheader. The men are set to begin at 3 p.m. following the women at 1 p.m.
