FRESNO, Calif. —
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten led all players with 22 points but the Dominican University of California men's basketball team fell 77-55 in an exhibition at Division I Fresno State on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs led by a bucket through the first eight minutes of play. Then, Schwartz-Edmisten took over with back-to-back three pointers and a free throw, followed by a free throw from junior forward
Josh Ramirez that gave the Penguins a 25-19 lead with under six minutes to go in the half. However, senior guard
Matt Hayes was whistled for his third foul. A Bulldogs free throw tied the game at 28-28. Junior guard
Ryo Tawatari's three-pointer gave Dominican the lead but the Bulldogs answered with a three of their own. The Bulldogs used their size to reclaim the lead 35-33. Dominican junior guard
Josh Armstrong picked off an inbounds pass and Dominican called timeout but the Penguins were unable to convert two tries before time expired.
However, Fresno State picked up the intensity and the physicality in the second half. The Bulldogs, who score 32 of their points in the paint, also won the rebounding battle 42-33 and added 16 second-chance points. Cezar Guerrero (13 points) opened the half with a quick layup and the Bulldogs outscored Dominican 14-5 for a 13-point lead by 15:10 to go in the game. The lead ballooned to 28. The Penguins would get no closer than 21, in large part for being held to 24 percent (6-of-25) from the floor after shooting 39.3 percent (11-of-28) in the first half.
