SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team looked to play spoiler against first-place Point Loma but a second-half goal inched the Sea Lions closer to first place.
Dominican (5-10-2/5-6-1 PacWest) battled to a scoreless first half. Point Loma (13-4/10-2 PacWest) gave an early scare in the fifth minute when a goal was waived off when the Sea Lions were called offside. The same thing happened for the Penguins in the 35th minute when
Alyssa Campbell played a nice ball into
Mariah Meza, who was called offside. Dominican had scoring opportunities thwarted in the 17th and 18th mintues on shots by
Yvette Lozano, whose shot was blocked, and Meza, whose shot went wide.
Rachel Witz netted the game-winner for the Sea Lions in the 55th minute when the junior midfielder beat Dominican's freshman goalkeeper,
Gabriella Tassano, in a 1v1 situation to the back left post. Tassano kept the Sea Lions from doubling the lead in the 71st minute with a nice save off of a free kick, and made two more saves in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore
Katrina Cline had a shot in the 69th minute that went high from the top of the circle. Junior defender
Stephanie Pawek took a shot in the 78th minute from the far left wing that sailed wide.
The Sea Lions hold the tiebreaker versus Azusa Pacific (14-2/10-2 PacWest), who also won on Thursday. Dominican could play spoiler when the Cougars visit on Saturday, Nov. 7 for the Penguins' final match of 2015. First kick is slated for 12 p.m. on Kennelly Field with a pregame Senior Day ceremony honoring the team's five seniors —
Kelsey DeCarlo,
Lauren Gollnick,
Kayla Karlsson,
Samantha Owens, and
Stephanie Owens. Live stats and video will be available at
