Senior Day spoiled by No. 19 Azusa Pacific

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team's 2015 campaign came to a close with a tough 1-0 loss to No. 19 Azusa Pacific on Saturday on Kennelly Field.

It was an emotional pregame for the Penguins as they honored seniors Kelsey DeCarlo, Lauren Gollnick, Kayla Karlsson, Samantha Owens, and Stephanie Owens. Gollnick, who suffered a knee injury in Wedesday's match, took the field to start the match with her fellow seniors and made the opening kickoff before departing.

The difference was an Azusa Pacific goal in the 27th minute, a Katelyn Rogers score with an assist from Haley Fisher. The Cougars (15-2/11-2 PacWest) outshot the Penguins (5-11-2/5-7-1 PacWest) 18-3. Dominican had its best scoring opportunity in the 66th minute waived off. Sophomore Mariah Meza dribbled into the box on the right side and drew a defender out. She made a perfect pass to Karlsson, who finished. However the Penguins were called offside. Meza had another shot in the 76th minute but had her shot saved. She also had a header in the 53rd minute that went wide. Karlsson had a header also in the 74th minute that went wide as well.

The Cougars, while ranked No. 19 in the country, finished in second place in the PacWest. Point Loma, who beat Azusa Pacific in head-to-head play, held the tiebreaker and narrowly beat Holy Names 2-1 on Saturday. The Sea Lions netted the game winner with 33 seconds remaining in regulation to earn back-to-back titles.

In 2015, Dominican improved its wins by one more under first year Head Coach Kelly Coffey. The Penguins also finished a spot higher in the standings, in seventh place in the 14 team conference.
