SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team battled for 110 scoreless minutes and earned a 0-0 draw with Point Loma in PacWest action.
The Penguins (2-14-1/2-9-1 PacWest) escaped trouble early when Point Loma's (8-5-3/3-5-2 PacWest) Tagaloa booted a point-blank shot way high in the 17th minute. Both teams nearly headed into halftime with a lead of their own. Dominican junior forward
Roberto Macias aimed for the back right post but Point Loma goalkeeper Lambert got a hand on the ball to save a goal and gave Dominican a corner kick instead. Dominican goalkeeper
Oscar O'Con scooped up his third save of the half before time expired to preserve the shutout.
Another scare came in the 94th minute when Eduardo Gallardo was found open in the box after the ball deflected through a pair of Dominican defenders. Luckily for the Penguins, his shot went far right. Dominican countered in the 95th minute but freshman
Matt Case's shot was blocked. Point Loma attempted another last-second shot from near midfield that bounced but O'Con jumped and punched the ball out for another save. O'Con, who matched a career-high seven saves, made two more saves in the 103rd and 104th minutes. Case had another shot of his own in the 104th minute but that went high as well.
Dominican will look to knock Azusa Pacific (5-9-2/5-6-1 PacWest) out of a three-way tie for sixth place in the PacWest when the Cougars visit on Saturday, Nov. 7 for the Penguins' final match of 2015. First kick is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Kennelly Field with a pregame Senior Day ceremony honoring the team's four seniors —
Joshua Godoy,
