Penguins' win streak snapped at three

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped in a 95-72 loss to UC San Diego in the Sixth Annual UCSD Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.

Junior guard Allyssa Weatherd led all players with 28 points for the Penguins and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough to combat a well-balanced UCSD (4-1) team. The Tritons, who received votes in the latest USA Today NCAA Division II women's basketball poll, shot 55.2 percent (37-of-67) from the field and outrebounded the Penguins 51-31. UCSD had four players in double digits, led by Cassie MacLeod's double-double (21 points, game-high 13 rebounds).

The Penguins stumbled out of the starting blocks and scored just one point in the first five minutes as the Tritons jumped out to a 12-1 lead. Back-to-back three pointers from Carly Holboke and Natalie Diaz cut the lead to four in the second quarter but the Tritons went on a 19-7 run to take a 43-27 halftime lead. The Penguins would get no closer than 13 in the third quarter after another Diaz three-pointer.

Holboke and Sandra Ikeora added 10 points apiece for the Penguins. Diaz scored nine points in the loss.

Dominican will face Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. in day two of the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic.
