LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team mounted a comeback effort but time expired on the Penguins in a 70-68 loss to Cal State San Bernardino in the second and final day of the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic inside RIMAC Arena.
The Penguins (4-3) led by seven early and a point after a quarter and at haltime but found themselves in a hole after being outscored 25-16 in the third quarter. The Penguins stormed back in the fourth quarter and outscored the Coyotes 15-9 but it wasn't enough to overcome the shaky third quarter. Junior
Taylor Donnot found fellow junior
Allyssa Weatherd for the and-one to cut it to 61-60 with 7:30 to go but that's as close as the Penguins would get.
Dominican had four players in double digits, led by Weatherd's 15. She was named to the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team and was 9-of-9 from the free throw line with five rebounds and four assists. Senior
Melissa Boscarino added another solid game with 13 points, six rebounds, a pair of assists, and a pair of steals. Sophomore
Sandra Ikeora scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting with eight rebounds and three blocks. Donnot added 11 points with career highs of 11 rebounds and six assists.
All five Coyotes starters reached double digits, led by Chelsea Austin's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Adriana Brodie and Brianna Harden each had 11 points. Alexcia Mack and Chelsea Barnes added 10 points apiece.
Dominican returns home for its last home game of the calendar year on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Penguins open up PacWest play versus Fresno Pacific at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. That is "White Ice Night," where fans are encouraged to wear white to the game. Additionally, the first 100 fans will receive a free PacWest t-shirt featuring the updated conference logo. Live stats and video will be available at
