TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team twice erased a 10-point deficit to record a 70-66 non-conference road victory at Stanislaus State on Saturday.
The Penguins (2-2) went scoreless for nearly four minutes in the first half as they watched the Warriors (1-1) build a six-point lead. A
Matt Hayes three-pointer stopped the bleeding momentarily but the Warriors added seven unanswered points to take a 25-15 lead with 8:33 to go in the first half.
Karl Ohrner's buzzer beater trimmed the Stanislaus State lead to 35-29 at halftime.
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten drained back-to-back three pointers in the first minute of the second half and it was a brand new ballgame at 35-35.
Josh Ramirez's layup gave the Penguins a 38-37 lead, its first since the 12-minute mark in the first half. Dominican's offense went quiet for another extended period of time and didn't score for nearly three minutes as the Warriors built another 10-point lead with back-to-back three-pointers. Hayes answered with another long ball and layups from
Ryo Tawatari and
Russell Davis trimmed the lead back to a possession, 55-52. Hayes drew a foul with 5:22 to go and sank both free throws to give Dominican the lead, 58-57. The Warriors tied the game with free throws of their own, but a
Seth Turner jumper out of the media timeout gave Dominican the lead for good, 63-61, with 2:43 to go.
Ramirez led all players with a season-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Hayes poured in a season-high 17 points with three three-pointers and had six rebounds. Schwartz-Edmisten also had three three-pointers and finished with 15 points and four assists. Junior
Seth Turner led the Penguins with a career-high nine rebounds and had four assists as well.
Forward Alek Carlson led the Warriors with 16 points. Christian Bayne and Kyi Thomas added 10 points apiece in the loss.
Dominican will next head to Montana where the Penguins will face Montana State Billings and Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28.
