SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team won its third consecutive match as the Penguins swept Holy Names 25-13, 25-20, 25-12 on Senior Night.
It was an emotional night for the Penguins (9-16/6-13 PacWest) as they honored their lone senior,
Amanda Wasko. An all-PacWest selection as a sophomore, Wasko missed last season with a knee injury and missed most of this season with a reaggravated injury. That didn't stop the senior from making her first appearance since Sept. 24. She served exclusively and recorded a pair of service aces and had two digs.
Dominican trailed 9-8 in set one but sophomore
Shannon RiggioKerley answered with a pair of kills to kick off a 17-4 Penguins run that gave them an early lead. Wasko served the Penguins to three straight points in set two and Dominican defended the early lead to extend the lead to 2-0. The Penguins built a 5-0 lead in set three and the Hawks (3-26/1-19 PacWest) never scored more than two straight points the rest of the way.
Dominican recorded its second-highest hitting night of the season (.341) and made just seven attack errors the entire night. Sophomore
Aimee Steinwand led all players with 12 kills and served up a career-high five aces. Four others had six apiece — freshmen middles
Brittany Latigue and
Kate Even, Riggio-Kerley, and junior
Madeline Powelson. Fellow junior
Hannah Smith dished out 33 assists.
Defensively, junior libero
Amanda Lee anchored the Penguins with a match-high 16 digs to maintain her PacWest lead (5.82/set). Powelson had 11 digs and Smith added seven.
Lihau Perreira led HNU with eight kills.
