Steinwand has 19 kills as Penguins drop finale

SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team looked to close out the season on a four-match win streak but had its plans spoiled in a 3-1 (15-25, 25-9, 25-16, 26-24) loss to Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion in the two teams' season finale on Saturday.

Dominican (9-17/6-14 PacWest) breezed to a quick victory in set one but the Urban Knights (10-18/6-14 PacWest) earned the season split by taking the next three sets. Dominican lost its momentum in set two and never quite recovered. ART U ran away with the set thanks to an 8-0 advantage and the Penguins hitting .000, then took a 2-1 match lead. The Penguins looked to force a fifth set when back-to-back Madeline Powelson and Aimee Steinwand kills evened the set at 24-24. However, a pair of Dominican errors gave ART U the match.

Steinwand led Dominican with 19 kills and finishes her season fourth in the PacWest in kills per set (4.06). Reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week Brittany Latigue added seven. Junior libero Amanda Lee, who entered the match in the NCAA Division II top 20 in digs per set, recorded 27 digs and finishes her season atop the PacWest in digs per set (5.86). Powelson added 12 digs and Alexa LoGiudice had 11.

Melissa Brum led all players with 25 kills for ART U. Five Urban Knights recorded double digit digs, led by 19 from Kabrina Speakman.

Dominican finishes 9-17 and 6-14 in PacWest play. The Penguins saw a promising season derailed by injuries — sophomore Madison Marshall went down with a season-ending knee injury in the third week of practice and senior Amanda Wasko reaggravated a knee injury that sidelined her the entire 2014 season. Steinwand also missed three matches with a concussion.
