SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team flexed its muscle in a 103-36 victory over Pacific Union College (NAIA) on Tuesday evening in the Conlan Center.
The Penguins never trailed and raced to a 31-9 lead in the first quarter. Dominican stopped pressing and still led 47-16 by the half. Dominican put up 33 points over the final 10 minutes to break the 100-point mark. Head Coach Tim Lakose was able to empty his bench and all but one player scored and all but one player had a rebound. Sophomore forward
Sandra Ikeora had a career night for the Penguins (2-1). She poured in a career-high 27 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds as Dominican pounded the ball inside. The Penguins outscored the Pioneers (0-5) 64-4 in the paint and had a 32-0 in-the-paint advantage in the first half. Freshmen
Natalie Diaz and
Alyssa Lorenzo added career nights with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Junior guard
Jade Castro came off the bench for a dozen points and junior guard
Allyssa Weatherd added 10. Junior guards
Melissa Boscarino and
Taylor Donnot nearly made it seven players in double digits with nine points apiece. Junior center
Ashley Sorensen pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Boscarino dished out a career-high six assists as the Penguins dished out 26 assists.
Dominican's 45 field goals made tied the most in a single game, set in 2009 against PUC. The 103 points scored were the most since 2004 when the Penguins topped Southern Oregon 101-51. The margin of victory was also the most by a Penguin team since 2004, when the Penguins topped Cal Maritime 82-8. That 2004-05 team went on to make an NAIA Division II national tournament appearance. The Penguins pulled down 62 rebounds, one shy of the team record in the Division II era. It was a dominating performance from every aspect, as the Penguins also scored 37 points on turnover while only giving up two points off a turnover, scored 28 second chance points and 20 fast breaks, and didn't allow any PUC second chance or fast break points. Dominican's bench actually outscored its starters 57-46. The Penguins shot 50.6 percent (45-of-89) and held the Pioneers to 20.4 percent (11-of-54).
Center Essence Jones led the Pioneers with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Dominican will head to San Francisco State on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a 5:30 p.m. game in "The Swamp."
