SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team used a huge second quarter to beat San Francisco State 72-62 in non-conference action on Saturday.
The win gives the Penguins a 3-1 record through their first four games. That's the team's best opening mark in NCAA Division II history and best since the Penguins opened the season with a five-game winning streak in 2004.
Dominican trailed 18-15 after a bumpy first quarter but opened the game up with 28 points in the second quarter to build a 43-33 halftime lead. The Penguins, who shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the first half and 40.7 percent (22-of-54) for the game, limited the Gators (1-3) to 33.3 percent (24-of-72) and just 28.9 percent (11-of-38) in the second half. Dominican added four points to its lead in the third quarter but the Gators threatened late and cut the lead to five, 60-55, with 4:44 to go. However, a
Natalie Diaz putback sandwiched by a pair of
Allyssa Weatherd free throws grew the lead back to nine. Five consecutive points from Tatsiana Dashkevich cut the lead back to five with 1:03 to go but five consecutive free throws, three from
Carly Holboke and a pair from
Ashley Sorensen, iced the game.
Weathered led all players with 21 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Holboke adde 15 points and five rebounds. Diaz added 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Sophomore
Sandra Ikeora added eight points in the win.
Dashkevich led the Gators with 16 points on 5-of-5 free throw shooting. Naila Washington added 15 points and Laura Lawson scored 14. Lawson also pulled in a game-high 17 rebounds.
