HAYWARD, Calif. — A day after pulling away late to win the season opener, the Dominican University of California women's basketball team fell late in the game to host Cal State East Bay on Saturday, 68-58.
Dominican (1-1) trailed 13-11 after a quarter but grabbed a 27-26 lead headed into halftime. The Pioneers (2-0) regained the lead by the end of the third quarter and pulled away with a 26-point quarter to best the Penguins. The game was tied 50-50 with 6:31 to go but a Shannon Bland jumper with 5:33 to go gave the Pioneers the lead for good.
Melissa Boscarino's basket with 3:49 to go cut the lead back to two but that's as close at the Penguins would get. Dominican was forced to foul and the Pioneers won the game at the free throw line, where they made their final 10 free throw attempts.
