Penguins pull away late to capture season opener

HAYWARD, Calif. — Allyssa Weatherd scored 24 of her 29 points in the second half and the Dominican University of California women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to open the season with an 88-78 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at Cal State East Bay.

Junior Taylor Donnot scored 16 points in the first half to pace the Penguins. The Otters led 24-19 early in the second quarter but the Penguins cut the lead to one on a Donnot three-pointer. Melissa Boscarino pulled up for a fast break jumper on the next possession and Dominican led 31-30. Mykala Harris evened the score a couple of minutes later but another Donnot bucket sent the Penguins into the locker room with the lead, 36-34.

Weatherd opened up the third quarter with a fastbreak layup but the Otters went on an 8-0 run and the Penguins fell behind by seven. Two more Weatherd fastbraeak layups kicked off a 7-0 Dominican run and the game was again even at 55-55 with 1:33 to go in the third quarter. A pair of Weatherd free throws kept Dominican ahead at the end of the third quarter, 57-56. Dominican outscored the Otters 31-22 over the final ten minutes. Stephanie Sack's three-pointer gave CSUMB a 62-60 lead with 7:48 to go but that would be the Otters' final lead. Weatherd took over with the next seven points and Dominican would lead by no fewer than three points the rest of the way.

The lead changed hands 11 times. Dominican pounded the ball inside for 40 points as the Penguins shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field and had four players in double digit scoring. Weatherd, who was named one of the top shooters in NCAA Division II by Hero Sports, went 10-of-13 in a full 40-minute effort. Donnot went 9-of-15 with a pair of three pointers en route to her 22-point night. Freshman Natalie Diaz scored 12 points and also played all 40 minutes. Senior Melissa Boscarino added 11 points. Weatherd also added a team-high seven rebounds.

CSUMB was led by 21 points off the bench from Victoria Dunn's 8-of-16 shooting. Forward Jazmine Johnson added 14 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Dominican faces host Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m.
