Penguins use early lead to pounce on Cougars

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Sophomore Aimee Steinwand matched a career-high 24 kills as the Dominican University of California women's volleyball team gave a full team effort in a 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17) victory over Azusa Pacific on Thursday night in the Conlan Center.

Dominican avenged a 3-1 loss in Azusa earlier in the season by setting the tone with a 25-14 victory in set one. The Penguins fought back from a pair of deficits — an early 8-3 disadvantage that the Penguins erased with a 6-1 run that evened the set at 9-9, and a 19-17 deficit. The Penguins went on to score the next four points to reverse their fortunes. The Cougars evened the set at 21-21 but a pair of Azusa Pacific attack errors and kills from Steinwand and Kate Even gave Dominican the 2-0 match advantage. Dominican led 9-8 in set three but a six-point run followed by a five-point Cougars run forced a fourth set. Six consecutive Azusa Pacific errors in set four turned a 5-4 Cougars lead into a 10-5 lead for the Penguins. The Penguins raced to the finish line and closed out the set strong with a pair of Brittany Latigue kills and one final one from Steinwand.

Latigue added a dozen kills and matched a career-high six digs as the Penguins hit .219 for the match, including .308 in set one and .306 in set two. Meanwhile, the Penguins limited Azusa Pacific to .122 hitting, including .057 in set one and .000 in the fourth set. Four Penguins tallied double digit digs, led by 18 from junior libero Amanda Lee, who continues to lead the PacWest in digs per set with 5.86. Madeline Powelson added 15, Shannon RiggioKerley had 13, and Steinwand had a dozen. Alexa LoGiudice added four digs as she helped stabilize the back row in set four. Hannah Smith dished out 42 assists and had 25 in the first two sets alone.

Thursday was also Dig for a Cure Night, as the Penguins raised proceeds for volleyball alumna Skyler Moon '13, who recently underwent surgery for colon cancer. To help Skyler and her family, please visit gofund.me.com/moonfamilymedical.

The Penguins will look to keep things rolling on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. when Notre Dame de Namur comes calling. In the two teams' last meeting on Oct. 28, the Penguins were without Steinwand due to a concussion and Dominican saw its five-match win streak agains the Argos snapped in a 3-1 loss.
