Penguins flirt with century mark in exhibition victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team adjusted quickly to the new rules in NCAA women's basketball as three players posted double-doubles in a 99-71 exhibition victory over Cal Maritime Academy.

The biggest change in college women's basketball this season is the move to quarters and the Penguins seemed to have no problem with the new structure. Dominican led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter and put up 30 points in the second quarter for a 50-21 halftime lead. Dominican went to the free throw line 17 times in the new format, which sees the removal of the traditional single bonus. Instead teams head to double bonus at five fouls and team fouls are reset at the end of each quarter. Dominican made 14 of those tries, led by a 4-of-5 effort from Alyssa Weatherd. The junior finished her night with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Dominican received a game-high 21 points from freshman Natalie Diaz, who added 11 rebounds and five assists. Junior Carly Holboke added 16 points on 5-of-9 shoting from beyond the arc. Senior Melissa Boscarino scord nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out a game-high six assists with just one turnover in a starting role. Junior Ashley Sorensen came off the bench and scored 11 points and led all players with 12 rebounds. Sophomore Sandra Ikeora added nine points and five rebounds. Every Dominican starter scored thanks to a pair of free throws from junior Taylor Donnot, who also had three rebounds three assists. Dominican did plenty of damage in the key as the Penguins outscored CMA 46-24 in the paint and outrebounded their opponents 60-24. The Penguins shot 49.3 percent (37-of-75) from the field and limited the Keelhaulers to 37.7 percent (26-of-69) shooting.

Juinor Amber Herrly came off the bench and led the Keelhaulers with 18 points on six three-pointers. Senior guard Jennifer Keys added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and junior guard Luisa Delos Reyes scored 13 points for CMA.

Dominican will head to Hayward, California on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14 fro the Conference Challenge Tournament hosted by Cal State East Bay. Dominican opens will Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. on Friday and faces the host Pioneers on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Penguins return home to the Conlan Center on Tuesday, Nov. 17 when they open with Pacific Union College (NAIA) at 7 p.m.
