SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Junior
Roberto Macias gave the Dominican University of California men's soccer team a late lead but a shocking string of events found the Penguins on the losing end of a 2-1 overtime decision versus Academy of Art on Halloween.
Dominican's (2-14/2-9 PacWest) goal came on a
Michael Gomez throw-in that senior
Cory Vanderpool headed down into the box for Macias' team-leading sixth goal of the season. That moved Macias into a tie for 10th in the PacWest in goals scored.
The Penguins even outshot ART U (7-7-2/5-5-1) 17-14, including 8-6 in the second half. However, ART U scored on a pair of own goals. On both ART U goals, the scoring team didn't even celebrate as they didn't realize they had scored. In the 88th minute, Kristoff Urbanyi played a corner from the left side into the box. After a scrum in front of the net, the ball appeared to go out wide left but instead Dominican goalkeeper
Oscar O'Con retrieved the ball from the back of the net for the ART U own goal.
With five seconds remaining in overtime, another scrum on the right side found the ball dribbling towards the back left post. O'Con, who was defending two ART U players on the right side, dove to his right but the ball was just out of his reach. It was a tough loss for not only the Penguins but O'Con, who made six saves including one in the final minutes of the second half and another in overtime.
