Josh Armstrong had 10 points but the Dominican University of California men's basketball team fell 82-52 in an exhibition on Friday night at Division I University of Nevada, Reno.
The Wolf Pack, led by one-time Golden State Warriors Head Coach Eric Musselman, got a game-high 18 points from senior Tyrone Griswell. Freshman Lindsey Drew had 13 points, 10 in the first half. Fellow freshman Cameron Oliver and junior DJ Fenner added 11 points apiece. AJ West led all players with 11 rebounds.
The glass is where the Penguins were outmatched, losing the battle 53-24. Senior guard
Matt Hayes pulled down a team-high five rebounds. The Penguins were whistled for 33 fouls. Nine players had at least three fouls and two, Armstrong and junior transfer
Seth Turner, saw their nights end early with five fouls.
Still, Dominican hung around for longer than the final score indicated. The Penguins took the initial lead on a Ramirez three-pointer off a pass from junior transfer
Ryo Tawatari. With seven minutes left in the first half, a
Reverend Maduakor (nine points) three-pointer gave Dominican a 19-17 lead. However, the Wolf Pack answered with a six-point run to take a 23-19 lead. The Penguins pulled back within a pair but the Wolf Pack ended the half on another six-point run to close the half with a 37-27 lead. The Penguins cut the lead to five with 16 minutes to go in the second half but wouldn't get any closer.
Dominican has one more exhibition, set for Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Fresno State. The Penguins faced the Bulldogs two years ago in exhibition and fell 91-67. Dominican opens the regular season at home in the PacWest/CCAA Challenge, Nov. 13 and 14, versus Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
