BELMONT, Calif. — Dominican University of California junior libero
Amanda Lee recorded 33 digs and moved into the lead in the PacWest in digs per set in Wednesday's four-set (25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23) conference loss at Notre Dame de Namur.
Lee's match-best 33 digs give her 5.88 digs per set. She passed Concordia Irvine's Taylor Dennison, who is averaging 5.80 digs per set. Lee now has 423 digs on the season, which are already a Dominican single-season record in the Division II era. Earlier in the season, she also broke the career digs mark set by Hannah Stocking (821, 2010-13); Lee currently has 1,051 and counting.
However, injuries continued to haunt Dominican (6-13/3-10 PacWest) as the Penguins were without their top outside hitter,
Aimee Steinwand, after the sophomore suffered a concussion in Saturday's match versus Dixie State. Dominican used seven players on Wednesday but remained competitive. The Penguins erased a five-point deficit in set one and tied things at 20-20 on a
Shannon RiggioKerley kill. However, the Argonauts (8-14/4-9 PacWest) scored five of the next six points to take an early 1-0 lead. Dominican found itself in the same position in set two, tying the frame at 20-20 after kills from Riggio-Kerley and
Kate Even. However, NDNU again pulled through at the end with five of the next six points.
Kills from
Madeline Powelson and Even gave Dominican an early 5-3 lead in set three and five NDNU attack errors gave the Penguins a 9-4 lead. Dominican grew the lead to 19-9 and another Powelson kill forced a fourth set. Dominican grabbed another large lead, 8-2, but the Argonauts climbed back into the set. An 8-2 Argonauts run tied the match at 19-19. The Penguins grabbed the next three points but a 6-1 run by the Argonauts prevented a fifth set.
Latigue and Riggio-Kerley both matched career highs with a team-high 14 kills apiece. Even added a career-high 13 and Powelson had seven. Lee wasn't the only Penguin keeping the ball in play as five recorded double-digit digs. Powelson added 24,
Alexa LoGiudice had a career-high 17, Riggio-Kerley had 16, and
Hannah Smith had a dozen. Smith dished out 43 assists.
Bianca Alvarez had a match-high 23 kills for the Argonauts. Maggie Billingsley dished out 49 assists. Kawal Robins-Hardy was one of five Argos to record double-digits digs and had a team-high 22.
