Penguins beat Dixie State to grab share of first place

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team won its third consecutive game on Friday to grab a share of first place in the PacWest iwth a 2-1 victory over visiting Dixie State.

Dominican (3-5-1/3-1-0 PacWest) struck first in the 20th minute on freshman Lily Dubuc's second goal of the season. The freshman streaked down the left side and fellow freshman Bailey Kiser hit her with a perfect pass. Dubuc struck the ball to the far back post to lift the Penguins to a 1-0 lead. Senior Kayla Karlsson subbed in at the goal, then made an instant impact four minutes later. Freshman Alyssa Campbell took the throw-in from the right side and placed it perfectly into the box and Karlsson was there to beat goalkeeper Danica Nusink in the front left of the goal mouth.

The Penguins made the most of their opportunities. The Penguins tallied six shots, five of which were on goal (and the first two were goals). The Penguin backline held Dixie State (2-5-0/0-3-0 PacWest) to one goal on 15 shots, eight on goal. Freshman Gabriella Tassano notched her third win in goal with seven shutouts.

The Red Storm scored in the 42nd minute on a flip throw from the left side that resulted in Tori Washington getting a foot on the ball in the middle of the box.

Dominican hits the road for the next five matches. The Penguins will head to Fresno Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur next week, then embark on a three-match trip to Hawai'i.

Dominican returns home for an Oct. 31 Halloween matchup vs. the team that Dominican currently shares first place with, Academy of Art. Dominican Athletics will be hosting "Chilly's Cove" for parents, alumni, and friends of the program, plus the all-new "Kick or Treat" event featuring a free carnival with games and candy for kids.
