Owens, Pawek lift Penguins to victory at NDNU

BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team reamined near the top of the PacWest Standings with a 2-1 road victory at Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.

Both teams attempted three shots in the first half.  NDNU (2-7/2-3 PacWest) capitalized first with a goal in the 51st minute. Erin Banda passed ahead to Macee Broer, whose shot from 25 yards out found the top left of the net.

The Penguins (4-6-1/4-2-0 PacWest) eved the match in the 76th minute. Sophomore Mariah Meza connected with senior Stephanie Owens. Meza crossed the ball into the center, where Owens fought off a defender and nailed a shot to the back post for her first goal of the season. An Argonauts foul in the 81st minute set up penalty shot and junior Stephanie Pawek was selected to take the penalty kick. The Dominican defender scored the game-winner.

NDNU had four chances in the final ten minutes but two shot sailed wide, one was blocked, and one was saved by Dominican goalkeeper Gabriella Tassano. The freshman keeper made four saves in the win.

Dominican has 12 points and is currently tied for third place in the PacWest with Point Loma. Concordia Irvine, which beat the Penguins, and California Baptist, which suffered its only conference loss to the Penguins, are tied for first place at 4-1 and 15 points.

The Penguins will now head to Hawai'i to face all four Hawaii teams in the PacWest. The weeklong trip will begin on the Big Island at UH Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 17.
