Herrera's two goals not enough at NDNU

BELMONT, Calif. — Junior Alex Herrera scored twice but it wasn't enough in an eventual 4-2 loss at Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday in PacWest play.

The Penguins (1-10/1-5 PacWest) were haunted by another early goal. In the third minute, Jack Ewert played a ball over the Dominican defense that bounced over Dominican goalkeeper Patrick Rabbitt that Esteban Berumen tapped in for the early 1-0 NDNU (5-5/3-2 PacWest) lead.

Dominican rebounded quickly thanks to Herrera. Freshman Micah Alo played a low cross from the right side and Herrera scored into the top right of the net. In the 13th minute, senior Cory Vanderpool — in his return since missing the last nine matches with an ankle injury — headed a ball off of a long throw that Herrera volleyed in.

The lead wasn't to last though, as NDNU struck for three second half goals. In the 50th minute Tyler Matas crossed a ball to Ewert, whose header to the back post tied the match. Less than a minute later, Omar Herrera scored on a header to give NDNU the lead again. That chased Dominican goalkpeeper Patrick Rabbitt. Oscar O'Con played the final 39 minutes but also allowed a goal, an Alex Guillen-Torres penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

The Penguins will now head to Hawai'i to face all four Hawaii teams in the PacWest. The weeklong trip will begin on the Big Island at UH Hilo (1-8/0-4 PacWest) on Saturday, Oct. 17. Dominican will end the trip on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Chaminade. That match wil certainly be a rivalry match this season, as Dominican Head Coach Zach Kingsley led the Silverswords last season before coming to Dominican at the beginning of the 2015 season.
