Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team was outshot 24-4 but the Penguins came away with a 0-0 draw in non-conference action at Cal State East Bay on Monday night.
"Tonight was a war of attrition," said Dominican Head Coach
Phil Billeci-Gard. "We had a lot of heavy legs but tonight was a good show of character and grit get a point on the road."
The Penguins' fatigue showed in the opening minutes, as Dominican (0-2-1) was playing its third contest in five days while the Pioneers (0-1-1) came out amped up for their home opener. The Pioneers took the first 16 shots of the game, though most of those shots came from 30 to 40 yards out. Only six of CSUEB's shots were on frame.
In fact, the Penguins didn't take a shot until the 72nd minute. Their best shot came in with 50 seconds left in regulation when senior
Kolby Mitnick had a 1v1 situation against CSUEB keeper Adrian Topete but his shot grazed the post. Mitnick had another shot blocked in a physical first overtime period, which saw four of the match's six yellow cards issued in that time.
The Penguins didn't allow a shot on goal in overtime. Senior goalkeeper
Erik Anderson made six saves in his first shutout of the season. Freshman
Bryan Note and senior
Vini Enriquez took Dominican's other two shots.
The Penguins will head to Idaho, where they'll face Northwest Nazarene on Sept. 12 and the College of Idaho on Sept. 14.
