Men's soccer drops home opener on hand ball in overtime

Kolby Mitnick gets past CSUSB goalie Ivan Sanchez to tie the game on Saturday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking non-conference loss on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 overtime loss to Cal State San Bernardino.

"Soccer's such a cruel sport sometimes," said Dominican Head Coach Phil Billeci-Gard. "San Bernardino got a goal against the run of play. They countered us and got a goal. We had to battle back, went 1-1, were in it and prepared to win and it's unfortunate, a ball hits a hand."

With 1:25 left in regulation, Dominican (0-2-0) was penalized for a hand ball in the box. That set up a penalty kick for Juan Jose Gonzalez, whose third goal of the season got past Dominican goalie Erik Anderson.

Until that point, the two teams played fairly even. The Penguins started five freshmen and the Penguins played to a scoreless halftime, yet outshot the Coyotes 5-3 in the opening stanza. The Coyotes (2-0-0) struck first on a counter to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Penguins evened the match in the 69th minute when Cory Vanderpool connected donwfield to Kolby Mitnick, who broke past diving goalie Ivan Sanchez and scored in a wide-open net. From there, Dominican fended off a pair of shots, one of which went wide and one that Anderson made the save on.

"We'll grow from it, we'll get better from it. The guys understand they can compete with anyone," said Billeci-Gard. "It's just a matter of having a little better luck in certain moments but we'll be alright and bounce back."

The Penguins will head to Cal State East Bay on Monday, Sept. 8 for a 7 p.m. non-conerence match before embarking on a two-game trip to Idaho versus Northwest Nazarene and the College of Idaho.
