Box Score CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team saw its 2014 season debut spoiled by a trio of Chico State goals on Thursday night at University Soccer Stadium.
The Wildcats (1-0-0) got the game winner just five minutes into play. A corner kick resulted in a Akwafei Ajeakwa header to the far post. The Penguins managed two shots, a header by
Cory Vanderpool that was saved, and a shot by
Vini Enriquez that went high.
Chico State caught the Penguins off guard yet again in the second half with two quick goals in the 49th and 53rd minutes. Matt Hurlow scored from the right wing on a restart, then nearly scored a half minute later but that shot sailed high. Still, the Wildcats pressed on and netted a third goal off of Justin Walmsley's header at the far post off of another restart.
Patrick Davis had a shot in the 81st minute but his shot from the top of the circle went high.
In all, the Penguins (0-1-0) were outshot 12-3. Dominican goalie
Erik Anderson made a pair of saves, both in the first half, but suffered the loss.
