Early lead doesn't hold up in conference loss

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer established a 1-0 lead but BYU-Hawaii scored twice over the final twenty minutes to prevent the Penguins from their first win of the season.

After a scorelsss first half, the Penguins (0-8-0/0-2-0 PacWest) went up on freshman Mariah Meza's first career goal in the 49th minute. Stephanie Owens crossed a ball in from the right side to Meza, who finished from about eight yards out to the bottom left of the goal.

The Penguins' lead lasted into the 73rd minute when Mckenzie Evans' header off the Tess Hobbs corner kick from the left side got past Dominican goalkeeper Raquel "Rocky" Ramos for the equalizer.

The game slipped away in the 87th minute when, in a scramble in front of the net, Jana Wall managed to get a foot on the ball, which slipped past the defender on the left side.

Dominican was outshot 10-4 but placed all four shots on goal. McKenna Kimball had a shot with eight seconds left but Seasiders goalkeeper Daniella Chacon was there to make the stop.

The Penguins head to San Francisco to take on Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the second match of a PacWest men's-women's doubleheader. The women are set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
