SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team suffered yet another gut-wrenching loss in a 1-0 double overtime loss at the hands of visiting Chaminade on Thursday afternoon on Kennelly Field.
"The game could have gone either way. We had a few great chances and they had to make the better saves," said Dominican Head Coach
Phil Billeci-Gard. "They just got the one that counted the most at the very, very end."
Despite the final outcome, Dominican (0-6-1/0-1-0) looked strong throughout the team's PacWest opener, registering 10 shots, six of which were on frame.
The Penguins had their first look in the 32nd minute on a
Bryan Note shot that was blocked.
Lee LeVerrier was there to settle the rebound but had his shot saved by Chaminade goalkeeper Bernd Buescherhoff.
Dominican had a great look in the 33rd minute. Note's shot from the left side was saved by Buescherhoff, who somehow managed to recover and dive to his left to save the second-chance shot by
Garrett Blodgett.
Josh Godoy's shot off a throw-in in the 51st minute caught Buescherhoff off-guard but missed barely a foot high.
Chaminade (3-3-0/2-0-0) threatened in the 78th minute with a pair of shots off the set piece from the right side but the defense was there for the block and Dominican goalkeeper
Erik Anderson smothered the second effort.
Anderson punched out a Colton Galt header in the 96th minute to send the match into yet another overtime period.
After 32 fouls had been called over the course of the game, the most costly came in the 106th minute. A hard foul by Dominican's
Josh Rosenberg on Lukas Pousset resulted in a yellow card in the box. That set up a Silver Swords free kick from the top of the box. Nicholas Ferro's shot to the back bottom right of the net managed to pass through both the wall of players and a diving Anderson to win the game.
"I don't fault the effort, I don't fault our guys buying into what we're doing, it's been great. We just haven't come out on the winning side," said Billeci-Gard. "This will challenge us mentally and physically but most importantly we have to keep pressing forward and working on the process of getting better, which we will."
The Penguins host BYU-Hawaii in another PacWest contest on Saturday, Sept. 27 with the men at 12 p.m. and the women to follow at 2:30 p.m. Saturday is also Chilly's Cove, where parents, alumni, and Penguin Club members are invited for free food and refreshments and raffle prizes while watching the game from the north end of John F. Allen Athletics Complex overlooking Kennelly Field. Chilly's cove will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
